Golden Eagles go out with a bang

DOBSON — The Golden Eagles put together their most complete game of the season and gave the home fans something to cheer about on Senior Night.

After honoring its lone senior, Nolan McMillen, Surry Central came out with an energy and never let up in defeating Carver 68-52.

It was the first win for Central (2-22, 2-12) since Dec. 13 against Forbush and the only win in regulation.

The Eagles have shown signs of improvement and threatening to win, but hadn’t gotten over the hump until Friday night.

A week ago at Atkins, Surry Central led 7-6 in the first quarter before Atkins went on a 16-3 run to finish the first quarter up 22-10.

At home against West Stokes, the Eagles trailed by just one point at 9-8 before the Wildcats went on a 17-4 run to make it 26-12.

The Eagles led 17-10 against Walkertown before the Wolfpack finished the first half on a 13-0 run.

After beating Forbush in overtime in the first matchup, the Eagles led by four points in the third quarter of the rematch before falling by six.

Central led 26-24 at halftime against North Forsyth.

Against North Surry, it was the other way around. The Eagles fell behind by 17 and then closed all the way to 73-70 before losing 78-72.

On Senior Night, however, the Golden Eagles never allowed Carver to outscore the home team in any quarter, much less the whole game.

It was 8-3 after Brady Woods hit a three-pointer and showed his exuberance getting back on defense. A couple of minutes later Woods would sneak in on the left baseline and soar high in the air to tap in a missed shot.

Christian Robinson came off the bench and, starting with drawing a foul at the 2:47 mark, scored eight of the next 12 points for Central. This helped Central take a 15-11 lead at the end of the first and then stretch it to 22-13.

Making a difference on defense was Dakota Mills, who attacked every perimter pass and got his hands on several.

Averaging just 4.4 points per game, Mills had six points in the first half alone as well as a behind-the-back bounce pass to McMillen on the fast break for an assist. Mills finished with 11 points.

The Eagles were out and running for much of the second quarter and outscored Carver 25-16 and led at the break 40-27.

Mills and Levi Coe had the first two buckets of the second half to make it 44-27, then Carver came back with five straight points. After a free throw from McMillen, a second three-pointer Malik Thomas (and his third of the game) made it 45-35 and the Yellow Jackets were threatening to reach single digits.

Then Woods and Robinson had five points each and Central led at the end of the third 58-42.

After going 9-12 (75%) from the foul line in the first three quarters, the Eagles didn’t fare as well in the fourth, going 6-11 (54.5%).

That was enough, though, as Carver went 3-8 from the line itself and the teams were an even 10-10 in the quarter.

The Eagles’ 68-52 win was in stark contrast to the 76-44 loss on Jan. 22, a swing of 48 points.

With the win, Surry Central moves ahead of Carver for seventh place in the final standings.

That means in the conference tournament Carver will go to West Stokes to take on the top seed (13-1 in the league, 19-4 overall). Surry Central will go to Atkins (18-5, 12-2 WPAC).

North Forsyth (18-6, 11-3) will host Forbush (7-16, 3-11). And North Surry (15-9, 8-6) will host Walkertown (9-13, 6-8).
