What's Buc-ee's?: Breaking down the hype behind 'Beaver Fever'

FLORENCE, S.C. (WGHP) — “I’ve been smiling since I walked through the door,” said Mckinley Willis.

Mckinley Willis stopped at the Buc-ee’s in Florence, South Carolina, with a friend Dominique Green on their way home from a wedding. It was her first time.

“I saw a post on Instagram about how Buc-ee’s has great food, and we’ve never stopped before, so we decided to stop before we go home and see what’s good,” Willis said.

While they tried to decide what to get, Kimberly Tetterton and Katanja Clapp knew exactly what they wanted.

“In our town, Sheetz is the big thing,” said Tetterton. “Sorry, Sheetz, but Buc-ee’s is like 15 times better.”

Clapp loves the prices and says people will be amazed how affordable it is.

You can watch people’s eyes light up once they get inside.

Willis and Green decided to try the brisket. Clapp and Tetterton decided to branch out on this Tripp. They make time to pick up treats on the way to and from their destination for other people, too.

“I love the hype it’s different things that we wouldn’t get at another service station,” said Clapp.

Some make it a family affair. Brian Hughes took his dad and son on a trip to Myrtle Beach. His dad had never made a stop at Buc-ee’s, so the family took a 20-minute detour on their way back to the Triad.

“My son goes to Chapel Hill, so we’ll be able to go back and forth taking him to school and stopping in Mebane,” said Hughes.

The Hughes family, along with Tetterton and Clapp are counting down the days until there’s a Buc-ee’s right down the road.

“That will automatically be a permanent stop for me,” said Tetterton. “I’ll probably be there every week if not every day.”
