Virginia man charged with murder after man assaulted in Winston-Salem at Salem Lake Park dies, police say

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A Virginia man has been charged with murder in connection to a homicide investigation after a man died in Winston-Salem, according to a Winston-Salem Police Department news release

At about 7:50 a.m. on March 21, Winston-Salem police responded to a report of a person who appeared to have been assaulted lying on a sidewalk at Salem Lake Park.

Officers found the victim, 27-year-old Rodney Dwight Adams Jr., unresponsive. He had suffered severe injuries to the head. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Adams died on April 5. Police say the case is under investigation as a homicide.

The incident “was not a random act of violence,” and “there was no danger to the community,” police say.

On April 18, detectives with the WSPD obtained a warrant for arrest for Jerry Christopher Howard, 40, of Patrick Springs, Virginia, for common law robbery.

On April 22, authorities with the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police took Howard into custody and served the common law robbery warrant.

After his arrest. detectives with WSPD obtained an additional warrant for arrest charging Howard with felony general murder.

Howard remains in custody at the Patrick County Jail awaiting extradition.

He is facing additional charges in Patrick County related to his arrest on April 22.
