It can take only a few minutes to stop off at a convenience store and buy a lottery ticket, an endeavor that has brought big bucks to a Surry County woman.
Donna Salerno of Elkin beat odds of one in 962,598 to win the jackpot of $227,513 for the Carolina Cash 5 contest of the N.C. Education Lottery for Saturday night, gaming officials in Raleigh announced Tuesday afternoon.
After federal and state tax withholding, Salerno took home $160,711, according to lottery spokesman Van Denton.
Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every night of the week. Tickets cost $1, which participants can buy at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website.
Salerno had bought a Quick Pick ticket for the Cash 5 game at the Sheetz convenience store on CC Camp Road in Elkin.
Under the Quick Pick option, ticket buyers have the gaming terminal randomly pick numbers for them.
Cash 5 is described as a “rolling” jackpot game in which a $1 ticket gives one a shot at jackpots that start at $100,000 in cash and keep on climbing until someone wins the entire prize. The estimated jackpot entering Wednesday night’s drawing was $151,000, up from $120,000 on Tuesday.
Salerno has maintained a low profile since capturing the prize Saturday night, according to Denton, the lottery spokesman.
This included declining to pose for a photo, as do many lottery winners. “While we love to have them, we don’t force folks to do it,” he added.
The same goes for the traditional disclosure by lottery winners of what they plan to do with their winnings.
“She did not,” Denton advised Wednesday regarding the Elkin resident’s reluctance to divulge that information. “Very nice winner, but didn’t want to share her story.”
Cash 5 is said to have the best odds of winning among lottery jackpot games.
