Some cattle euthanized following crash on I-81S in Rockbridge County


The Rockbridge Baths Volunteer Fire Department is providing an update on the two crashes on I-81 in Rockbridge County Tuesday afternoon.

The department responded to the first crash on I-81 South at Fairfield, followed by a second tractor-trailer crash involving livestock.

According to officials, the department was called to assist at the scene of an overturned cattle truck on North Lee Highway near Fairfield Elementary School while traffic was delayed from the original accident.

The truck was overturned on the southbound side of North Lee Highway, with 63 cattle on board. Crews said it was necessary to unload the cattle before righting the tractor-trailer.

“All the cows were unhappy, some were injured in the wreck, and some required euthanasia,” said the department in a Facebook post.


Virginia State Police are investigating two crashes that happened on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County Tuesday afternoon.

Police said there were no major injuries, but there will be extensive cleanup ahead for crews.

As of 3:27 p.m., all south lanes were closed and traffic was backed up for about three miles.

Crews said Sterrett Road and Route 710 are blocked and Exit 205 is also closed.
