The Shepherd’s House and its supporters were staring down a big-time challenge recently, with a goal of raising more than $100,000 during its recent Super Bowl Tailgate fundraiser.
Just like a quarterback who never flinches in leading his team from a come-from-behind victory, Shepherd’s House officials and friends were able to stay focused on the tasks at hand and exceed this year’s goal.
The 17th annual event took place Feb. 1, at Cross Creek Country Club, with the dinner sold out.
The night began as Tonda Phillips, board chairman, gave the welcome and recognized the volunteers, staff and board members that worked together to make the event possible.
Shepherd’s House Director Mary Boyles then shared the highlights of 2019, which included serving 225 clients. However, more than 500 people were turned away from the homeless shelter due to lack of space.
Boyles continued by recognizing long time-board member Bob Meinecke for his dedication as a board member and always being a strong voice for our neighbors in need. Also recognized was employee Joshua Edwards, for his dedication and hard work in making a difference in the lives of so many through creating better programs that fit. The biggest highlight was shared at the end of her presentation with showing the ground breaking video highlighting the Oct. 14 event that is paving the way for an expanded Shepherd’s House to be built.
While the dinner portion of the event was sold out, additional guests were allowed to come in after 7:30 p.m. and participate in the remainder of the evening’s events, which proved to be standing room only.
“Our community, its businesses and the many organizations that gave items for the silent and live auctions, along with so many individuals participating, truly put the event over the top Saturday night with the biggest record financial take … for the night’s event and the event as a whole,” Boyles said.
“The biggest winner of the night though was the Shepherd’s House,” Boyles stated. “Since 2003, The Shepherds House has provided more than 71,000 nights of shelter to over 2,500 women, children and families in need and also provided more than 206,000 meals to those clients served. In 2019, through partnerships, and outside of our own walls, we reached over 5,000 people experiencing food insecurities and provided over 31 families with a Christmas they would not have been able to afford. Without your support, local businesses, partnerships and the community this much needed ministry would not exist,” Boyles said.
Dustin Rogers, of Rogers Realty, kicked off the organization’s largest-ever live auction, bringing in almost $25,000, which included a beach house vacation, Toyota Rav4, artwork and a live concert donated by Will Jones. The online auction, being put on for a second consecutive year, raised more than $11,000.
Ten people shared the $10,000 draw-down, though not everyone kept the money.
“We are so thankful for many of those that donated a portion, and some their entire winnings, back to the Shepherd’s House,” Boyles said. “We are extremely fortunate, and blessed, for all you and our community, did in helping us reach our goal of over $100,000. Your contributions to our neighbors in need continues to bless the lives of many and assists in restoring hope and rebuilding lives every day.”
