Severe thunderstorms will roll through Piedmont Triad

(WGHP) — Severe thunderstorms will roll through the Piedmont Triad this afternoon and evening. While a cluster of storms has already formed in the mountains and foothills, a line of storms may take over and push through the Triad as we approach the 4/5pm timeframe. Strong to severe storms remain possible through 8 PM. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats with storms as they roll through and isolated, localized flooding can’t be ruled out due to how saturated the ground has become with recent rainfall.

Once we’re done with Thursday’s rainfall, we’ll be switching to a new weather pattern and HEAT will be the main focus heading into the weekend and next week.

Overnight Thursday, we’ll see clearing skies and temperatures will fall into the mid 60s by Friday morning. Skies will be clear and sunny to end the work week and temperatures will reach the upper 80s by the afternoon.

An upper level high pressure system will settle in by the end of the weekend and our temperatures will reach dangerous levels for those that are required to work or be outdoors. Saturday starts off in the upper 60s and afternoon highs reach the low 90s with mostly sunny skies. By Sunday, we get a little warmer and morning lows will be in the low 70s with highs reaching the low 90s.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday look to be the hottest days of the week which means if you need to be outdoors, make sure you have ways to stay cool and hydrated. We’ll start all three mornings in the low to mid 70s and afternoon highs temperatures will reach the mid 90s. Because of the humidity, it’ll feel even hotter with some feels-like temperatures around 105°. Skies will be sunny and clear which means no relief from the clouds and no rain is expected so, no quick afternoon cool down.

Mostly sunny skies remain on Thursday with morning lows in the low 7s and afternoon highs still reaching the low 90s. A stray shower can’t be ruled out towards the second half of next week but the majority of us look to remain dry. The chance for rain is 20%.
