Senate rejects resolution to block arms sales to Israel

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — A group of U.S. senators attempted to block additional American military aid to Israel as the Israeli military expanded its operations in Gaza, killing more than 100 Palestinians since Thursday.

The Israeli Defense Forces said they have resumed ground operations in northern Gaza and killed more than a dozen Hamas fighters since a temporary ceasefire collapsed.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I-Vt.), led a group of 15 senators pushing a resolution to withhold billions of dollars in U.S. military aid, citing humanitarian concerns.

“The United States must not continue to be complicit in the destruction of the Palestinian people,” Sanders said. “History will not forgive us for this.”

The Senate overwhelmingly rejected the resolution, with most lawmakers maintaining that Israel has a right to defend itself.

“Now is not the time to deprive our ally of the tools it needs to protect American interests,” said Sen. James Risch, (R-Idaho).

At a NATO summit in Brussels, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stark warning to individuals planning to visit the U.S. who are believed to support Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

“We’re not going to continue to be stupid enough to let people into our country who are coming here to tear things up. Not going to happen,” Rubio said. “If you’re coming here to create problems, you probably have a problem.”

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, called out the administration for this stance.

“That is fundamentally un-American, fundamentally unconstitutional,” Mitchell said, adding that Americans have the right to criticize foreign governments, including Israel.
