SCC students donate to animal shelter

DOBSON – The members of the Agriculture Club at Surry Community College collected food and money for the Surry County Animal Shelter in December after finding out that food donations were down. Members went to the shelter on Dec. 12 to deliver what they had collected.

Student Lauren Reynolds once worked at the shelter and was able to tell the club about her experience there. The club learned that the shelter needed food and treats as their past food supply donations were discontinued.

The Agriculture Club is advised by Lead Instructor of Applied Animal Science James Quick and Horticulture Instructor Jamie Renzi. Members include students enrolled at Surry Community College, Surry Central High School, Surry Early College, East Surry High School, Elkin High School, and Mount Airy High School, all taking classes at the college.

“The students are extremely interested in animal welfare and giving back to the local animal population,” said Quick. “Many of the students hope to go into the animal industry upon graduation. Some of their career goals include veterinarian, poultry farmer, vet tech, dairy farmer and wildlife officers.”

This is the first year of Surry Community College having the Agriculture Club. Prior, there was a Horticulture Club, but when the Animal Science program was created, the instructors decided to bring students together as a club.

“The combined students have been able to learn from each other and become more informed in agriculture-related topics, on the plant and animal side. The club has sponsored a few trips, including a tour of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, as they have one of the best Agriculture programs in the country,” Quick said.
