SCC holding specialty classes

DOBSON – Surry Community College will have several business and specialty career classes starting in January across Surry County.

Notary Public will take place in Room 107, The Elkin Center, 1461 North Bridge St., Elkin, on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Thursday, Jan. 23, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The two-night, seven-hour course is to prepare students to become a notary public in North Carolina. Topics will include notary qualifications, guidelines, and processes for notarizing documents. After passing the course test, students are eligible to submit an application to the Secretary of State to become a notary.

The cost of the class is $71, and the textbook fee is $26.65 with (price may vary). For more information or to register, call 336-386-3398. Please note that in order to take this class, students must live or work in North Carolina, be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or High School Equivalency degree, be able to read and write English, have no felony convictions (some misdemeanors apply) and have a valid driver’s license or N.C. State ID.

Personal Income Tax Prep will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 30 through April 2 form 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 103 in the J Building, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. This course is designed for instructional areas related to the relevant laws governing individual income taxation: tax law, electronic research and methodologies, and use of technology for preparation of individual income tax returns. Cost for the class is $183 plus supplies.

A Commercial Drone Operator class will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 25 through Feb. 8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Yadkin Center, 1001 College Drive, Yadkinville. The training will prepare learners for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS)/Drone Flight Certification. Cost for the class is $71. Drones are not provided.

Woodworking, Cabinetmaking, Small Wood Projects and Lathe Turning will be offered on Mondays, Jan. 27 through June 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 304 at The Center for Public Safety, 1220 State St., Mount Airy. The class is designed to introduce students to the fundamental techniques of working with wood and the various hand tools and machines used in cabinetmaking and woodworking. In addition, lathe and turning skills will be taught to those that are interested. Students choose a wood project of their choice and receive instruction on planning the project, purchasing the materials and using tools and equipment to safely complete the project. Cost for the class is $183 plus supplies.

Furniture Refinishing will be offered on Mondays, Jan. 27 through June 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. in Room 304 at The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. This course is designed for students to learn the basics of refinishing and repair of wooden furniture and cabinetry. Upon completion, students will have learned to use the tools and techniques necessary for repairing and refinishing a piece of furniture. Upholstery techniques are not included in this course. Cost for the class is $183 plus supplies.
