Riggs named Gentry Teacher of the Year

Eric Riggs has been chosen as the Teacher of the Year at Gentry Middle School for the 2020-21 school year.

“His work ethic and dedication to his career as an educator have been noted by his colleagues who elected him to represent them as their teacher of the year,” the school said in announcing the selection.

Riggs holds a BA degree in biology and a masters of arts in both middle grades science and administration. He has also earned his National Board certification for Professional Teachers.

Riggs teaches science at Gentry and is in his 14th year as a teacher. He has also served as an assistant principal at Central Middle school and a principal at Shoals Elementary, Franklin Elementary and Mount Airy Middle schools. In 2008-09 he served as Surry County School’s Principal of the Year.

Riggs says he is active in his church, Highland Park Baptist, and enjoys teaching youth, singing and serving. He is married to his “best friend,” Ann, and has three children: Eli, Isaac and Ella. He also notes that he was born and raised in Surry County to parents Ronnie and Audrey Riggs and that he attended Gentry Middle School as a student.

He also enjoys running and will compete in his sixth marathon on March 7.

“This is a well-deserved recognition for Mr. Riggs,” said Principal Brandon Whitaker. “He has a passion for students and the science curriculum. The whole child is integrated into each of his lessons, including character traits, leadership skills and of course, eighth-grade science. We are proud of Mr. Riggs.”

“I am blessed to have worked with so many amazing people over the years from all across the county,” Riggs said. “I believe it has given me a unique perspective to help reach students in the classroom. I believe educators have a great deal of responsibility and can really change the future for the better, both on an individual basis as well as on a community level.”
