One in custody after fatal shooting in Southwest Roanoke

A suspect is in custody after a man was shot and killed in the area of the Wasena neighborhood of Southwest Roanoke Friday morning (Oct. 28), according to the Roanoke Police Department.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., Roanoke Police were dispatched to the 900 block of Marshall Avenue SW after receiving a report that a person had been shot.

Authorities said they arrived to find a man on the porch of a home in the area with what appeared to be a critical gunshot wound.

Roanoke Fire-EMS pronounced him dead at the scene, and the victim will not be identified until his next of kin are properly notified.

Responding officers say that witnesses told them the male suspect in this incident ran inside the home.

The police department told 10 News that they found the suspect barricaded in the attic.

That’s when Roanoke Police secured the area and requested backup from the department’s Tactical Response Team.

A Roanoke Police Crisis Negotiator was able to talk with the man via phone, ultimately getting him to exit the residence.

At about 9:45 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody without further issue and taken to the Police Department.

This remains an ongoing homicide investigation, according to officials, and there is no current threat to the public at this time.
