One dead, one in custody after multi-vehicle crash on Route 640 in Franklin County

UPDATE

One person is dead and another is in custody following a multi-vehicle crash on Route 640 in Franklin County, according to Virginia State Police.

Authorities were called to Six Mile Post Road at about 7:49 p.m. for the report of the crash.

We’re told a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban was driving east on Six Mile Post Road when it ran off the roadway, overcorrected then hit a 2001 Kawasaki and a 2009 Yamaha that were driving west.

The driver of the Yamaha was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The person driving the Chevrolet fled from the scene on foot and was taken into custody not long after.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says Route 640 near Waid Park Road is no longer closed to traffic following a multi-vehicle crash.

Drivers on Route 640 in Franklin County can expect delays due to a multi-vehicle crash, according to VDOT.

Crews say the crash happened near Waid Park Road.

As of 11:05 p.m., all eastbound and westbound lanes were closed in the area, and traffic was being detoured onto Waid Park Road, then onto Pepper Road, before going back onto 6 Mile Post Road (Route 640).
