North Surry student earns band honor

Kaleb Riggs, a junior at North Surry, has been selected to the Northwestern All District Honors Band for the second year in a row.

Approximately 1,200 students audition for this honor, with about 90 being selected. Kaleb was the only student from North Surry to make the cut. The Honors Band will perform at Appalachian State University in February. Kaleb plays the contra bass clarinet.

Kaleb said earning the spot “Feels pretty good.”

These honors are not new for Kaleb. He has been auditioning for All-County Band and Yadkin Valley Honors Band since he was in the sixth grade and has made it every time. During his high school career he has added this latest accolade. Kaleb says he is going to try and make it again next year since he will be a senior.

North Surry High School Band Director Blake McCraw had nothing but praise for Kaleb. “Kaleb is really smart and a good musician. He can be a great leader but he can also be a great supporter. He is a team player. Kaleb is happy to serve in whatever capacity he is needed.”
