ABERDEEN, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Aberdeen said this week they finally tracked down and arrested a suspect in a Walmart self-checkout theft from nearly three years ago.
The incident dates back to December 9, 2021, when officers were sent to the town’s Walmart at 250 Turner St., according to a Wednesday news release from the Aberdeen Police Department.
The Walmart call was about a person involved in a larceny and “intentional miss-scanning of items,” officers said in the news release.
When police arrived, they met with Walmart security who said a man was “intentionally under-ringing” items at the self-checkout, police said.
Aberdeen police investigators then looked into the matter, including reviewing witness statements and checking surveillance video, officers said.
Police said investigators later confirmed the suspect’s identity as William Matthew Branch, 35, of Rockingham, according to the news release.
On January 24, 2022, a warrant was issued for Branch on the charges of misdemeanor larceny and felony obtaining property by false pretenses, police said.
“Attempts were made to locate Branch but he was not apprehended in Moore County,” police said.
On Nov. 3, Branch was found in Richmond County and arrested, according to police.
He was given a $1,500 secured bond by a Richmond County Magistrate, the news release said.
