Man fatally shot by Greensboro police officer on Lawndale Drive

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed by a Greensboro Police Department officer on Saturday morning.

At around 8:27 a.m. on Saturday, officers came to the 3000 block of Lawndale Drive after getting a report of an “armed subject.”

At the scene, a GPD officer saw 31-year-old Gerald Pinckney displaying “what appeared to be a handgun.”

Police say the officer gave “repeated commands” for Pinckney to drop the weapon and that Pinckney “ignored those commands” and began to walk toward the officer while continuing to display the weapon.

Investigators say the officer then fired their gun and struck Pinckney. EMS was requested and officers at the scene rendered him aid before he was taken to the hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation responded and is conducting an investigation as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

The GPD’s Professional Standards Division will also conduct an “internal investigation” to determine if department policies were followed.

The involved officer has been placed on administrative duty.
