Lynchburg police searching for suspect after two people shot at McDonald’s

UPDATE:

Lynchburg Police have identified Sherwin Overstreet as the man who shot two employees at McDonald’s on Wards Road Friday night in Lynchburg.

Police say Overstreet is still wanted. He fled the scene in a 2005 Red Mazda SUV, with a VA tag URS-7076.

He is charged with two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony.

Police say this incident is not connected to Thursday night’s stabbing in the parking lot of the Japanese restaurant across the street.

This is an ongoing investigation if you have any information, call police.

A shooter remains on the loose after shooting two people at a McDonald’s in Lynchburg on Friday evening.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, and there is no word on their condition at this time.

Police are actively searching for the shooter, but haven’t released specific details about a suspect yet.

Police responded to the shooting at the McDonald’s located in the 2100 block of Wards Road at 6:21 p.m.

There were a number of high school students working at McDonald’s on Friday evening. The father of one of those employees spoke with 10 News and shared his daughter’s account of what happened.

Levi Coleman told 10 News that his daughter clocked in just before the shooting.

“I just dropped my kid off at work at McDonald’s, went over to Burlington, did a little shopping. About ten minutes later, she called crying, saying somebody got shot right in front of her,” said Coleman.

Coleman’s daughter told him that her co-workers were the two people who were shot.

Police focused their efforts on the inside of the restaurant where the two victims were allegedly shot.

Coleman said his daughter told him the suspect was in the drive-thru before coming into the store.

“…Came around the corner, opened the door and then shot inside the building,” said Coleman.

It’s still unclear why the shooter came into the building or what motivated the attack.

Coleman’s daughter told him that one of the victims is her classmate.

“Really, I just hope they find the person, whoever done it,” said Coleman.

Coleman said as a parent, a shooting where his daughter works makes him very uneasy.

“I feel sorry for the ones that got shot, but I was sitting here crying because I thank god that it wasn’t my daughter that got shot and it’s a shame you can’t go to work now these days without getting shot,” said Coleman.

The general manager of the McDonald’s told 10 News they have nothing to say about the shooting. We were unable to reach the franchise on Friday evening for comment.

This is the second night in a row that police lights and crime tape lined Wards Road in Lynchburg.

This McDonald’s is across the street from where a man was stabbed on Thursday night in the parking lot between Subway and Koto Japanese Steakhouse. It’s not clear if these two incidents are related.
