The North Carolina Longleaf Commitment Grant is available for eligible 2021 North Carolina high school graduates who will attend Surry Community College or other North Carolina community colleges starting in the fall semester.
High school students may be eligible to receive this grant – not a loan – to cover tuition and fees toward a degree or to obtain transfer credit. Full-time eligible students are guaranteed to receive $700 to $2,800 per year, for a total of two years. Less than full-time students may receive a partial award. The Longleaf Commitment Grant Program ends at the conclusion of the 2023 spring semester.
“Never before has there been such an influx of federal and state funds to help community college students be successful and overcome financial hurdles,” said SCC President Dr. David Shockley. “I encourage each 2021 high school graduate to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to receive some, if not all, of their Surry Community College tuition for free. For eligible college transfer students, this is a great savings and way for you to complete the first two years of your bachelor’s degree at SCC. Eligible students who are going into technical fields can use the Longleaf Commitment Grant to pay for the majority, or perhaps their entire technical training needs at SCC.”
The NC Longleaf Commitment Grant requires the student:
· Graduate from a North Carolina high school in 2021
· Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
· Be a first-time college student (Career & College Promise (CCP) and Early/Middle College High School students are eligible)
· Enroll in a curriculum program during the 2021-22 academic year
· Enroll in at least six credit hours per semester
· Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2021-22
· Have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from $0 – $15,000. (“EFC” is based upon student’s FAFSA determination.)
· Renew FAFSA for the 2022-23 academic year and meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the college.
Applicants should apply to Surry Community College at www.surry.edu. Complete the residency determination form. Submit a FAFSA at www.studentaid.gov and then work with SCC’s Student Services office to determine eligibility.
There is not a separate Longleaf Commitment Grant application as consideration for funding is automatic once the FAFSA is filed and local college verification is completed. Eligible students will receive an award letter from their community college’s financial aid office. This is a newly created grant, so allow time for award letters to be sent in July 2021.
