LIST: COVID-19 cases, quarantines reported in local K-12 schools

As the school year begins, we’re working for you to track cases of COVID-19 across local school systems. Below is a running list of schools that have notified parents and staff of confirmed cases. If you know of one, email news@wsls.com.

2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

Tuesday, Sept. 7

  • Giles County Public Schools
    • Giles County Public Schools will be transitioning to Virtual Learning for the remainder of this week (Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 8th – 10th). The school system cited the high transmission rate of COVID in the community. The goal is to return to in-person learning on Monday, Sept. 13.
  • Bath County Public Schools
    • Bath County Public Schools will pause in-school instruction beginning Wednesday, September 8 through Friday, September 17. “This decision was made in collaboration with the local health department. Schools are closed today due to a shortage of transportation staff preventing the operation of school bus routes. The shortage is expected to continue through next week,” said a school system facebook post
    • As of this weekend, the school system says there are about nine students and three staff positive COVID cases. Approximately 49 students and four staff members are currently quarantined.
  • Craig County Public Schools
    • “Craig County Public Schools made the decision to close today to allow administration to conduct contact tracing relating to COVID exposures that occurred over the weekend involving staff and students. We will provide updates as appropriate,” said Superintendent Jeanette Day Warwick in an email to 10 News.
  • Pulaski County Public Schools
    • Pulaski County Middle School will be closed with a Code 2 synchronous virtual day today due to a staffing shortage caused by COVID related absences.

Friday, Sept. 3

  • Amherst County
    • There is an outbreak in progress, according to the Virginia Department of Health update today. 47 cases have been reported, and VDH was notified 8/25.
  • Appomattox Primary School
    • 10 cases have been reported and there is an outbreak in progress according to the VDH update. VDH was notified 8/20.
  • Bedford County
    • 15 new cases were reported across the school division.
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • 23 students and seven staff members are considered “positive active” cases, with 126 students and five staff members in quarantine according to the school system.
  • Danville City Public Schools
    • 93 students and 11 staff members have confirmed cases, with 81 students and three staff members exposed, according to the district.
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • 17 positive cases were reported since Monday, including eight at the high school, according to the district.
  • Franklin County
    • 47 students and seven staff members have reported positive cases, including 22 students and one staff member at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and 13 students and two staff members at the high school according to the school system’s dashboard
  • Lexington
    • Yellow Brick Road Early Learning Center is a daycare/pre-k school with 15 cases according to VDH’s update today and VDH was notified 8/10.
  • Lynchburg
    • New Covenant Schools has an outbreak in progress, according to the VDH update but they say the number of cases was not listed to preserve anonymity. The health department was notified 8/25,
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Seven new cases were reported and 44 people are in quarantine according to the dashboard.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • Seven new cases were reported, according to the dashboard.
  • Roanoke City Public Schools
    • 36 students and five staff members reported cases since Monday, according to the school system.
  • Roanoke County
    • Nine new student cases were reported among students across the school system. 444 students and 43 staff members were in quarantine, according to the dashboard.

Thursday, Sept. 2

  • Amherst County
    • The school division announced all schools would be closed until Sept. 13 after a COVID-19 outbreak. There are 198 active cases in the school division, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Arnold.
  • Bedford County
    • Thirteen new cases were reported across the school division.
  • Botetourt County
  • Campbell County
    • Four cases were reported, according to the dashboard
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • 23 students and five staff members are considered “positive active” cases, with 125 students and five staff members in quarantine according to the school system.
  • Danville City Public Schools
    • 86 students and 10 staff members have confirmed cases, with 79 students and three staff members exposed, according to the district.
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • 13 positive cases was reported since Monday across the district, including eight at the high school, according to the district.
  • Franklin County
    • Benjamin Franklin Middle School, The Gereau Center, and Franklin County High School will transition to remote learning on Friday. In-person instruction will resume Tuesday, Sept. 7.
    • 17 students and four staff members have reported positive cases over the first two days of the month, including 13 students and one staff member at Benjamin Franklin Middle School according to the school system’s dashboard
  • Giles County
    • 26 cases were reported, including ten at Giles High School according to the school system’s facebook page
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Three new cases were reported and 53 people are in quarantine according to the dashboard.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • Ten new cases were reported, according to the dashboard.
  • Roanoke City Public Schools
    • 30 students and five staff members reported cases since Monday, according to the school system.
  • Roanoke County
    • 11 new student cases and one staff case was reported across the school system. 438 students and 44 staff members were in quarantine, according to the dashboard.
  • Salem City Public Schools
  • Wythe County Public Schools
    • 38 students and four staff members have current, active cases, according to the district including eight cases at Spiller and seven at FCHS.

Wednesday, Sept. 1

  • Bedford County
    • To help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, Staunton River High School and Staunton River Middle School will be going virtual starting Thursday. In-person instruction will resume on Tuesday, September 7, with short-term enhanced mitigation.
    • Fourteen new cases were reported across the school division.
  • Botetourt County
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • Twenty-three students and five staff members are considered “positive active” cases, with 119 students and three staff members in quarantine according to the school system.
  • Danville City Public Schools
    • George Washington High School will revert to virtual instruction on Thursday, September 2 and Friday, September 3. “Our school has had a considerable number of COVID-19 cases and exposures. During our closure, our custodial staff will be deep cleaning classrooms and other shared spaces, as well as buses so that students can return to a safe, clean environment. We will also be putting finishing touches on our desks and desk shields,” said a facebook post.
    • Seventy-eight students and nine staff members have confirmed cases, with 79 students and three staff members exposed, according to the district.
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • One positive case was reported at Floyd Elementary School and one operational staff member case was reported, according to the district.
  • Franklin County
    • According to the school system, 1,580 students in Franklin County were absent Wednesday. While the students were out of school for a variety of reasons, most of the absences were quarantine-related.
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Five new cases were reported and 63 people are in quarantine according to the dashboard.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • Ten new cases were reported, according to the dashboard.
  • Nelson County
    • Five cases, including three at the high school, have been reported this week so far, according to the school system
  • Patrick County
    • 89 positive cases have been reported, including 63 at Patrick County High School. 219 people are in quarantine, including 125 from the high school, according to the dashboard
  • Roanoke City Public Schools
    • Twenty-three students and five staff members reported cases so far this week, according to the school system.
  • Roanoke County
    • Bonsack Elementary School reopens today, after being shut down for five days per a VDH directive.
    • Three classrooms at W.E. Cundiff were closed per a VDH directive, impacting 58 students.
    • Ten new cases were reported among students across the school system. 511 students and 51 staff members were in quarantine, according to the dashboard.
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • Twenty-nine students and one staff member have active cases. 208 students and five staff members are in quarantine right now, according to the dashboard.
  • Salem City Public Schools
  • Wythe County Public Schools
    • Thirty-five students and four staff members have current, active cases, according to the district including eight cases at Spiller and seven at FCHS.

Tuesday, Aug. 31

  • Bedford County Public Schools
    • Nine new cases were reported, including five at Staunton River High School
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • 15 students and two staff members are considered “positive active” cases, with 100 students and three staff members in quarantine according to the school system
  • Danville City Public Schools
    • 75 students and 9 staff members have confirmed cases, with 72 students and 1 staff member exposed, according to the district
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • Six positive cases were reported at Floyd County High School, according to the district
  • Franklin County Public Schools
    • As of 8:45 a.m., Franklin County schools tells 10 News about 1,100 students are currently in quarantine, with most of those being from the middle and high school. Hundreds of students were sent home in the middle of the school day Monday. Franklin County has about 6,175 total students.
    • For the month of August, 151 students tested positive including 58 cases at the high school and 46 at the middle school/Gereau Center. 32 staff members tested positive, according to the dashboard
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Four new cases were reported and 118 people are in quarantine according to the dashboard
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • 12 new cases were reported, according to the dashboard.
  • Roanoke City Public Schools
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • 11 new student cases were reported, according to the dashboard
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • 28 students and one staff member have active cases. 211 students and five staff members are in quarantine right now, according to the dashboard.
  • Wythe County Public Schools
    • 26 students and three staff member have current, active cases, according to the district including six cases at Spiller and six at FCHS.

Monday, Aug. 30 (note, many districts don’t report cases over the weekend, so Saturday-Monday cases are reported on Mondays)

  • Bath County Public Schools
    • One person tested positive for COVID-19 at Valley Elementary School. According to a letter sent to parents, that person was on school premises on Friday, Aug. 27, and was in contact with other members of the community in a “contained area of the school.”
  • Bedford County Public Schools
    • 18 new cases were reported according to the dashboard, including six at Staunton River High School, according to the dashboard
  • Campbell County Public Schools
    • One positive case was reported, according to the district
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • 15 students and 1 staff member are considered “positive active” cases, with 93 students and one staff member in quarantine according to the school system
  • Danville City Public Schools
    • 71 students and 8 staff members have confirmed cases, with 47 students and 1 staff member exposed, according to the district
    • 29 of the positive cases, and 42 exposures were at George Washington High
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • One positive case was reported at Check Elementary, according to the district
  • Franklin County Public Schools
    • 110 students and 32 staff members have tested positive in the month of August so far, according to the dashboard. This includes 44 students at the high school and 31 students at Benjamin Franklin Middle School
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Three new cases were reported and 69 people are in quarantine according to the dashboard
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • 21 new cases were reported including five at Christiansburg High School and four at Christiansburg Middle, according to the dashboard.
  • Pittsylvania County Public Schools
    • A total of 32 students and four staff members have current, active COVID-19 cases, with eight of those cases being at GES, according to the district
  • Roanoke City Public Schools
    • Nine students and four staff members reported cases, according to the school system
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Oak Grove Elementary has one classroom closed, per a VDH directive, impacting 19 students
    • 12 new student cases were reported and five new staff cases were reported, according to the dashboard
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • 27 students and one staff member have active cases. 211 students and four staff members are in quarantine right now, according to the dashboard.
  • Salem City Public Schools
    • Two cases at the high school were reported and one case at central office, according to the school system
  • Wythe County Public Schools
    • 34 students and three staff member have current, active cases, according to the district including 11 cases at Spiller and seven at FCHS.

Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29

  • Amherst County Public Schools
    • 27 positive cases reported across the district, according to the dashboard
  • Campbell County Public Schools
    • Five positive cases were reported Saturday and two positive cases were reported Sunday, according to the district

Friday, Aug. 27

  • Franklin County Public Schools
    • 101 students and 24 staff members have tested positive in the month of August so far, according to the dashboard. This includes 41 students at 3 staff members at Franklin County High School and 31 students and six staff at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.
  • Lynchburg Public Schools
    • One new case was reported and 34 people were in quarantine, according to the dashboard
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • Nine new cases were reported, according to the dashboard, including two at Christiansburg High School and two at Christiansburg Middle School
  • Nelson County Public Schools
    • A total of eight COVID-19 cases have been reported Friday, according to the dashboard.
    • This includes three cases at Rockfish River Elementary School, two cases at Nelson County High School, two cases at Tye River Elementary School and one case at Nelson County Middle School.
    • Of the eight who have tested positive for the coronavirus, three are employees and five are students.
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Ten students tested positive today
    • For the week of August 22-28, a total of 59 students and eight staff members tested positive across the school district including 18 students and 3 staff members at Bonsack Elementary, 10 students at W.E. Cundiff Elementary and five students at Hidden Valley Elementary.
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • A total of 28 COVID-19 cases have been reported as of Friday, according to the dashboard.
    • So far, 38 total cases have been reported in the district
    • 190 students are in quarantine, as well as four staff members

Thursday, Aug. 26

  • Bedford County Public Schools
    • 12 new cases were reported across the district, including three chases at LHS and four cases at JFHS, according to the dashboard.
  • Botetourt County Public Schools
    • A total of 12 COVID-19 cases have been reported today, according to the dashboard.
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • A total of 13 positive tests have been reported since Monday, with nine positive cases at Floyd County High School, according to the dashboard
  • Lynchburg Public Schools
    • After consulting with the VDH, Linkhorne Elementary School will shift to remote learning and will close the building for students on Aug. 27 and Aug. 30. Classes will resume in person on Aug. 31 if the school has enough staff.
    • Three new cases were reported, and 61 people are in quarantine, according to the dashboard
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • Seven new cases were reported, including three at Falling Branch Elementary, according to the dashboard
  • Pittsylvania County Public Schools
    • A total of 53 students and staff members have tested positive, including 8 employees and 45 students, according to the dashboard.
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Starting Friday, Bonsack Elementary School will be closed until Sept. 1 due to coronavirus cases among students and staff. This affects 325 students at the school. 12 students and three staff members have tested positive between August 22 and today.
    • At W.E. Cundiff Elementary School, one classroom was closed starting today per VDH directive, affecting 20 students.
    • A total of 16 students and four staff members reported positive cases today.
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • The school district reported on Aug. 26 that a total of four students have tested positive for COVID-19, including one student at Maury River Middle School, one at Rockbridge County High School and two students at Mountain View Elementary School.
    • After contact tracing, the school determined that eight students from Rockbridge County High School will need to quarantine, five Mountain View Elementary School students will need to quarantine and three students from Maury River Middle School will need to quarantine.

Wednesday, Aug. 25

  • Amherst County Public Schools
    • VDH recommended a temporary closure of all secondary school facilities in the county including Amherst County High School, Amherst Middle School, Monelison Middle School and Amherst Education Center from Aug. 26 until at least Sept. 2.
  • Franklin County Public Schools
    • During a school board meeting, leaders announced that more than 600 students are in quarantine.
  • Lynchburg City Public Schools
    • Six new positive cases were reported, with 41 people in quarantine, according to the dashboard
  • Patrick County Public Schools
    • There have been 69 positive cases with 245 people in quarantine, according to the school system’s dashboard. 56 of those cases are at Patrick County High School, with 165 in quarantine from that school.
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Two classrooms at Bonsack Elementary School were shut down due to positive cases among staff members and students, according to a letter set out to parents. Nine cases have been reported there since Sunday, August 22.
    • 13 new student cases were reported across Roanoke County schools today.
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools facebook notification:
    • One staff member at Natural Bridge Elementary School tested positive, and after contact tracing, it was determined 16 students need to quarantine.
    • Five students at Rockbridge County High School tested positive, resulting in six students who need to quarantine
    • Maury River Middle School had two students test positive, with three students needing to quarantine

Tuesday, Aug. 24

  • Bedford County Public Schools
    • 12 positive cases across the school system according to the dashboard
  • Floyd County Public Schools
    • 6 positive tests this week across the school system for the week of August 23-27, with 13 prior positive tests reported according to the dashboard.
  • Franklin County Public Schools
    • 62 students and 17 staff members have tested positive across all schools in the district during the month of August, according to the dashboard. This includes 28 students and three staff members at Franklin County High School, where the highest numbers have been reported.
  • Lynchburg City Schools
    • Three new positive cases were reported across the school system and 34 people are in quarantine according to the district dashboard. Quarantine is defined by Lynchburg city schools as “includes individuals who might have been exposed to COVID-19 or who’ve recently had close contact with someone with COVID-19.”
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • 11 positive cases were reported across the district. One of the athletic programs from Christiansburg Middle School has been quarantining due to positive COVID-19 cases on the team. For the week of August 23-27, 20 prior positive tests were reported at the school and there are nine positive tests this week as of the morning of August 25.
  • Pittsylvania County Public Schools
    • A total of 49 students and staff members have tested positive, including 7 employees and 42 students.
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • 13 students and 1 staff member reported positive cases, according to the school system’s dashboard
  • Wythe County Public Schools
    • Nine staff members and 34 students are reported as active cases according to the dashboard

Monday, Aug. 23

  • Amherst County Public Schools
    • Due to several cases being reported, Amherst County High School will be closed Tuesday, August 24 to conduct the necessary contact tracing.
  • Bedford County Public Schools
    • 12 positive cases across the school system according to the dashboard
  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • 62 students are currently in quarantine after 15 positive cases were reported, according to the Mount Rogers Health District and the school system’s dashboard
  • Galax City Schools
    • 15 students are currently in quarantine after two cases were reported, according to the Mount Rogers Health District
  • Montgomery County Public Schools
    • 14 positive cases were reported across the school system, according to the dashboard
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Seven students and three staff members reported positive cases, according to the school system’s dashboard
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • Three students at Maury River School tested positive over the weekend. After contact tracing, it was determined a total of 48 students from Maury River Middle School and Rockbridge County High School are required to quarantine.

Friday, Aug. 20

  • Henry County Public Schools
    • There were three new staff cases and 16 new student cases for the week of August 13-20, according to the dashboard. 72 people were in quarantine during that time period.
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Five students and one staff member tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard

Thursday, Aug. 19

  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Four students and two staff members tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools
    • Two students have tested positive for the coronavirus at Maury River Middle School. At this time, 16 students have been asked to quarantine after contact tracing.

Wednesday, Aug. 18

  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Four students and two staff members tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard

Tuesday, Aug. 17

  • Patrick County Public Schools
    • Eight people from Patrick County High School have tested positive for COVID-19
    • According to Superintendent Dean Gilbert, 84 people in total are out on quarantine, with three being staff members and the rest students
  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Six students and two staff members tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard

Monday, Aug. 16

  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Two students tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard

Friday, Aug. 13

  • Roanoke County Public Schools
    • Five students tested positive, according to the school system’s dashboard

Wednesday, Aug. 11

  • Carroll County Public Schools
    • Carroll County’s football team canceled Friday’s scrimmage against Christiansburg as a precaution, because some players may have been exposed.
  • Galax City Schools
    • Galax High School Principal Charles Byrd says a member of the football program tested positive last week, and they’re currently following our safety protocol and the team is quarantined. Coaches are working with athletes virtually and plan to be back on the field Monday.
  • Radford City Schools
    • The Radford High School football team canceled practices after multiple athletes tested positive this week. Players are in quarantine and will be retested Thursday according to the Superintendent

Wednesday, Aug. 4

  • Alleghany County Public Schools
    • Alleghany High School football in-person practices and team activities have been suspended until Aug. 14. This comes after the Alleghany County Public Schools Division Central Office was notified on Saturday, July 31, about student-athletes testing positive for COVID-19.
