Hospital breaks ground on new project

Northern Regional Hospital recently broke ground on its 25,000 square foot Medical Office Building and 300 additional parking spaces.

The new facility will be located directly behind the hospital, across S. South Street and is expected to be completed in March 2023. The ground breaking event was attended by more than 50 hospital and community leaders including special remarks by NRH Chairman of the Board of Trustees—William K. Woltz Jr., Surry County Commissioner Mark Marion, Mayor Ron Niland, City of Mount Airy Commissioner John Cawley, and hospital President and CEO—Chris A. Lumsden.

The groundbreaking marked the beginning of the Phase 1C of the hospital’s Master Campus Plan. Phase 1A began Oct. 11 with the closure of a portion of Worth Street. This project will transform the portion of Worth Street between Rockford Street and S. South Street, adjacent to Northern Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department, from a public street to a private driveway entrance accessing Northern Regional Hospital’s North Campus. Construction on this phase will continue through Dec. 31st.

Phase 1B of the Master Campus Plan will expand Northern Regional Hospital’s employee parking lot, located directly behind Northern Regional Hospital, and create 66 additional employee parking spaces. Construction began on this location on Sep. 13 and will continue through mid-December.
