Council resolves to cancel first meeting of year

Few things are certain in life, with that short list including death, taxes and usually the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners holding two regular meetings per month.

However, that three-pronged streak is being interrupted as far as the city council sessions are concerned, with officials opting to cancel a meeting that was scheduled for this coming Thursday afternoon.

That decision was made in a unanimous vote when the commissioners last gathered on Dec. 19.

Mount Airy officials rarely stray from their normal schedule of meeting on the first and third Thursdays of each month, and have even been known to do so in the face of a snowstorm.

Exceptions have occurred when those meeting dates fall in close proximity to holidays, which in Thursday’s case is right after New Year’s Day. This takes into account that those involved with municipal government, along with citizens, might be out of town or otherwise engaged in holiday-related activities.

Canceling such meetings has been a common occurrence in recent years during both the Fourth of July and Christmas-New Year’s periods, provided there are no pressing matters for city officials to address.

The next meeting of the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

The Surry County Board of Commissioners chose not to have a meeting on Dec. 16, its usual date as the third Monday in the month, as county offices were winding down for year’s end.

The county board will meet next on Monday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. in the historic courthouse in Dobson.
