Cook honored for Selective Service work

Surry County native Doug Cook recently was recognized for 20 years of service as a member of the United States Selective Service System Board.

Cook received a medal and commendation from Carlos Perez, manager of Region II, on behalf of the President of the United States. Region two covers 13 southern states and two U.S. territories.

In the event of a draft, Selective Service System board members would decide draft deferments, postponements, and exemptions based upon claims by the men who are selected for induction. Board members serve at the pleasure of the president.

Prior to a career as an educator, Cook served in the United States Marine Corps. He is a retired principal and administrator with the Surry County Schools, and a member of the Northern Regional Hospital Board. Cook and his wife, Bonnie, reside in Mount Airy.
