ORIGINAL STORY

There was a heavy police presence in a Salem neighborhood on Thursday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Cliff View Drive after a report of gunshots in the area.

Officers learned that two men took themselves to area hospitals — one went to LewisGale Medical Center and the other went to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Both men were treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers appeared to be canvassing the neighborhood and speaking to residents on Thursday morning. They also appeared to be searching front yards, bushes and trash cans.

A house was roped off with crime scene tape.

One neighbor, who declined to be interviewed, said his wife saw people running from the house.

Another neighbor, Joshua Rathe, said he didn’t know about the shooting until reporters came and knocked on his door.

“It was kind of a weird way to wake up today, just knowing that something happened and I didn’t know anything had happened yet,” Rathe said. “I have seen police cars over there before. I don’t know what happened or anything like that.”

There were no other injuries, according to Salem city officials.

Police haven’t made any arrests and the incident is still under investigation.
