Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools names new principal for Sedge Garden after mistreatment allegations

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A school under investigation for mistreating children has named a replacement principal.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools informed parents on Friday that Christy Slate would take over duties as principal of Sedge Garden Elementary School in Kernersville after Angela Reeves was suspended with pay pending further investigation.

“Slate is the current director of school improvement for the east area. She has a proven track record of school leadership including turning around two low-performing elementary schools and increasing test scores across grade levels,” according to WS/FCS.

They also shared a timeline of the allegations against the school, where a pre-K teacher’s assistant was accused of abusing children, including kicking them during nap time.

The timeline the school districted provided is as follows:

According to the NCDCDEE letter, during nap time, the staff member, who has not been criminally charged, “forcefully restrained a child, grabbed and lifted a child by the arm, kicked a child, yelled and spoke harshly to children, covered and wrapped a child’s head with a blanket and pushed the head down with her foot.”

NCDHHS said that Reeves was aware of this behavior, did not report it and “did not take steps to ensure the safety of children.”
