Video: What is the impact of Habitat for Humanity? High Point area director explains

HIGH POING, N.C. (WGHP) — Two High Point families will soon have new homes thanks to the combined efforts of FOX8 and Habitat for Humanity.

On Friday, June 14, the FOX8 family volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and shared their story on TV and online in honor of Founder’s Day of Caring.

This special volunteer day was established in 2016 by Nexstar Media Group founder, chairman and CEO Perry Sook. Every year during the third week of June, Nexstar employees across more than 100 television markets — including FOX8 WGHP in the Piedmont Triad — take part in service projects to benefit their local communities.

The FOX8 team spent all day Friday hard at work building one home and getting another read to be dedicated on Saturday.

“They’ve got most of the touch-up paint done in that house,” said Susan Wood, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of High Point, Archdale and Trinity. “They’re putting up walls in this one. You know your family coming out is really going to help two families here get in their homes quicker.”

Wood says this work is vital for the families that receive the homes.

“This house is going to a single dad, and it just means a new fresh start,” Wood said. “And they’ve worked hard. They’ve put in sweat equity hours to build this house and other houses. They’ve gone to counseling, credit counseling classes and home ownership classes, and this is just a great start for their family.”

Really, it is about getting together as a group, volunteering and making this work happen.

Anyone can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. If you are interested in volunteering in your community, you can find your local Habitat for Humanity branch online.

“We’ve got professionals here that will tell you what to do,” Wood said. “And, really, you just need a heart to serve, and come on out and join us and help families get in their homes.”
