(The Hill) — President Trump on Tuesday threatened legal action over mail-in ballots cast in California, while also slamming the state’s redistricting measure.
“The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “All ‘Mail-In’ Ballots, where the Republicans in that State are ‘Shut Out,’ is under very serious legal and criminal review. STAY TUNED!”
The Hill has reached out to the White House for clarification.
Golden State voters are expected to cast their ballots on Tuesday in consideration of Proposition 50, the state’s redistricting measure. If the measure wins, which recent polling suggests is likely, the state will redraw its congressional maps to give Democrats — already with a supermajority in the state — potentially a five-seat advantage in the House of Representatives.
If Proposition 50 loses, the state’s congressional districts will not be redrawn until the 2030 census.
Trump has been a frequent critic of mail-in voting and has repeated unproven claims of voter fraud as being associated with voters casting their ballots by mail. Trump claimed his loss in 2020 was because of expanded mail-in voting as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After returning to the White House, Trump signed an executive order in March requiring, among other things, Attorney General Pam Bondi to go after states that count absentee or mail-in ballots received after Election Day. Most states count mail-in or absentee ballots as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. Should states not comply, they could see their federal funding withdrawn.
In August, Trump threatened to issue an executive order to eliminate mail-in voting and “seriously controversial” voting machines, he said in a Truth Social post.
The following month, Trump suggested that his decision to move Space Command’s headquarters from Colorado Springs, Colo., to Huntsville, Ala., had to do with the state’s mail-in voting laws.
“The problem I have with Colorado, one of the big problems, they do mail-in voting. They do all mail-in voting. So they have automatically crooked elections,” Trump said. “And we can’t have that. When a state is for mail-in voting that means they want dishonest elections, because that’s what that means.”
Trump claimed Colorado has “a very corrupt voting system.”
