Truck driver charged in I-95 South crash where family, 3-year-old hospitalized: NCSHP

DORTCHES, N.C. (WNCN) — Emergency responders are currently clearing up and investigating the scene of a crash that shut down a major highway and hospitalized multiple people in Nash County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, first responders rushed to the scene of a crash around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 95 South just before the rest stop near Dortches.

When they arrived, troopers told CBS 17 that two tractor-trailers were involved in the motor vehicle crash. They said I-95 South is closed in a 4-mile stretch between N.C. Highway 43 and N.C. Highway 4.

A spokesperson from State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that one tractor-trailer rear-ended another, causing one to snap its cab from its trailer. “Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lanes of I-95, blocking both lanes completely,” the sergeant said.

All occupants of both vehicles were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, the trooper said. One of the people taken to the hospital was a three-year-old, though the trooper said it was for precautionary reasons. The driver of the rear-ended semi and his wife, who are the parents of the child, also received precautionary medical treatment.

The trooper said the driver of the tractor-trailer that rear-ended the other was cited for failure to reduce speed, driving while license revoked, and not wearing a seatbelt. The man who operated the vehicle, 27-year-old Marlon Patterson, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation asks that drivers follow detours in place as they clear the highway of debris.

According to the NCDOT, drivers can take exit 145 for N.C. 4 and turn right on North Halifax Road before taking a right on N.C. 43/Dortches Boulevard. From there, drivers can hop back on I-95 South.

NCDOT announced around 11:30 a.m. that I-95 South was clear and reopen to drivers in the area.
