CLEVELAND (WJW) — Soon, children dressed up as superheroes, princesses, witches, ghosts, “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” and more will be going door-to-door in the hopes of walking away with a bag or bucket full of candy (some of which may be highly valuable).

A recent analysis found that some of the communities those costume-clad kids are trick-or-treating in may be more dangerous than others.

SafeHome.org evaluated 161 cities using key safety metrics, including crime rates, pedestrian fatalities, the number of registered sex offenders, and local law enforcement presence based on data from the FBI, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and others. Cities were then given a composite score and ranked — those with a higher score were considered safer for trick-or-treaters.

The 10 cities that ranked as the safest in SafeHome.org’s study were:

  1. Yonkers, New York
  2. Naperville, Illinois
  3. New York, New York
  4. Gilbert, Arizona
  5. Frisco, Texas
  6. Surprise, Arizona
  7. Honolulu, Hawaii
  8. Scottsdale, Arizona
  9. McKinney, Texas
  10. Irvine, California

Of those cities, six ranked among the 10 cities with the lowest violent crime rates, the category in which the analysis placed the most weight for its overall score. Yonkers, however, was the only city to receive an A+ score in the report.

Alternatively, three cities scored F grades in the study. These cities had the lowest safety scores for trick-or-treaters, per the analysis by SafeHome.org.

The study found the following 10 cities to be the least safe:

  1. Memphis, Tennessee
  2. Richmond, Virginia
  3. Little Rock, Arkansas
  4. Oakland, California
  5. Salt Lake City, Utah
  6. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  7. St. Louis, Missouri
  8. Detroit, Michigan
  9. Cleveland, Ohio
  10. San Bernardino, California

Overall, Memphis had the highest rate of violent crime per 10,000 people across all cities analyzed. The second-highest rate belonged to Oakland, which also had the highest rate of property crime.

There are some tips authorities have shared to ensure safe trick-or-treating, like carrying a flashlight and other visibility-enhancing items; using sidewalks and crossing at corners with traffic signals and crosswalks; avoiding masks that can obstruct your or your child’s vision; and having children trick-or-treat in well-lit areas with adult supervision or with a group.

Experts also advise against eating any candy that may have been tampered with or homemade treats made by strangers.
