GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A suspect is in custody nearly three years after two teenagers were killed during a shooting at a party.
Assistant Chief Ric Alston, joined by Assistant Chief Stephanie Martis and NC A&T State University Police Chief Robert Hassell, announced the arrest Friday on the same day the arrest was made.
Rishon Elias Weaver, 20, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Kaneycha Turner.
At about 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2022, police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex on Circle Drive. The privately-owned complex, which is not owned by or affiliated with NC A&T, served as off-campus housing for many A&T students and is close enough to campus that AggieAlerts were sent out.
At the scene, officers found two people who had been shot: Turner and 15-year-old Ronaldlee Snipes. Both Snipes and Turner died. Four more victims arrived at a local hospital while officers were on the scene.
Snipes’ death remains under active investigation, Alston said Friday.
Turner was an NC A&T freshman and former Statesville High School basketball star.
Greensboro police revealed that around 75 people had attended a block party at the complex, which ended when a group began to fight. At least a dozen shots were fired.
A few days after the shooting, Turner’s roommate, Andreyah Bellamy-Alston, told FOX8 that they were in the area but had not attended the gathering. They were in their car outside of a friend’s house nearby when bullets went flying. Bellamy-Alston said Turner jumped out of the car to run away, and that’s when she was hit.
“Wrong place. Wrong time,” she said. “That’s really what it was.”
Bellamy-Alston recalled the moments leading up to the shooting that took her friend’s life.
“It was like shots started firing. … It was a whole bunch,” she said. “It was a lot of rounds, and I didn’t recognize until like my car was being shot at.”
These photos show those bullet holes in Bellamy-Alston’s car. One shattered her driver’s side window. Another hit her front windshield. A third hit the back driver’s side window.
Bellamy-Alston jumped out of her car once it was safe and found her roommate lying on the ground.
“I pulled back her hair. … Her eyes were open,” she said. “Her neck was swollen, and I just seen the blood and the bullet in her neck.”
Then-Chancellor Harold Martin Sr. sent out a condolence card after the shooting. The quote on it read:
“Her life was undoubtedly cut short. I, along with the Aggie family, will continue to keep her family, friends and loved ones in our sincere thoughts and prayers.”
