Surry GOP drawing battle lines

One sure sign of an election season heating up is political parties establishing a physical presence in communities to advance their goals, and Surry County Republicans are planning to man not one, but two, party headquarters this year.

These include a location in Mount Airy at 693 W. Pine St. and one in Elkin at 209 W. Main St.

However, party officials say it will be a few more months before the two election headquarters actually open to distribute campaign materials to the public and host other activities.

“Later this spring, we will announce beginning dates and times,” Republican Party Chairman Mark Jones disclosed, explaining that he wanted citizens to be aware of the two locations now.

“We are aiming for summer openings with our doors open multiple days per week depending on the availability of volunteers,” Jones added. “We will work to make phone calls, distribute signs and information and perform other operations to support Republicans.”

Jones suggests that a sense of urgency surrounds the 2020 election which is making grassroots efforts more vital than perhaps in the past.

“We all know how critical the upcoming November elections will be,” he commented. “We must elect conservative Republicans to fight against the wave of socialism sweeping through the Democrat Party.”

Local GOP officials believe the two headquarters sites selected are high-visibility locations that will aid their activities.

The one in Mount Airy is on the south side of West Pine Street (N.C. 89) just east of the U.S. 52 intersection, with Mount Airy Drug located across the street to the north. Creekside Cinemas is behind the building to the south.

“Traffic studies show this to be the second-busiest intersection in Surry County, which should bode well for getting folks inside prior to the November elections,” Jones reasoned.

The Elkin headquarters site on West Main Street has been donated by David George, who will be closing his business there, Dave’s Antiques, in the coming months, according to the Republican chairman.
