South Carolina man charged with animal cruelty, wagered $300 on dog fights, law enforcement says

TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. (WBTW) — A Timmonsville man is facing multiple counts of animal fighting or baiting and other felonies following a SLED operation that led to eight dogs being rescued, authorities said Wednesday.

Saquan Emmanuel Brown, 27, was booked into the Florence County Detention Center on nine counts of animal fighting, three counts of criminal conspiracy and six counts of ill treatment of animals.

Warrants provided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division say Brown’s criminal actions began in January and included use of social media to acquire and market dogs. He also made wagers of up to $300 on various fights.

At one point, Brown reportedly commented, “Damn, I bred that!” after seeing photographs of a pit bull-type dog with a large bite.

During a search of Brown’s property, authorities seized wound spray, squalid living conditions and several dogs tethered to trees exposed to the weather.

Officials said eight dogs were rescued and handed over to Humane World for Animals for treatment.
