An accident involving a Surry County school bus resulted in no injuries, but one student was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, according to a local emergency services official.
“It actually just slid off the road a little and got into the guardrail,” Surry Emergency Services Director John Shelton said of the incident that occurred in the 3700 block of Westfield Road on Thursday.
The accident was reported shortly before 8 a.m. as the bus driver was transporting students to classes at Westfield Elementary School.
About 35 children were aboard the eastbound vehicle, which received minor damage and was able to be driven from the scene.
“There were 34 refusals,” Shelton said of passengers declining medical treatment.
The mother of one student who had come to the scene did express concern and asked that her child be taken to the hospital, but no injuries were detected.
There was no indication Friday of charges being filed in the accident, with rainy weather this week a possible contributing factor.
“They tell me the guardrail is close to the road,” Shelton said of the two-lane stretch involved, which he said makes for tight conditions for a bus meeting oncoming traffic.
The shoulder of the roadway also is believed to have been comprised by rain and possibly caused the school bus to slide.
