Police investigating woman's 'suspicious' death after body is discovered in backyard of North Carolina home

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham police are investigating the “suspicious” death of an elderly woman Saturday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., a team from Durham Community Safety was sent to a “welfare check” on a woman in the 1100 block of Da Vinci Street, according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.

The team members checked the exterior of the home and found a dead person in the backyard of the house, police said.

Durham Police and EMS units responded to the scene.

“This incident is an ongoing investigation,” Durham police said in the news release.

The team that checked for the woman is called a HEART team. Durham Community Safety Department launched three units in 2022 called HEART teams, which stands for Holistic Empathetic Assistance Response Teams.

The units were started to “connect people experiencing non-violent mental health crises or quality of life concerns with the right care by sending new responses that better match residents’ needs,” according to a Durham news release.

Officers said anyone with information about this incident should contact Investigator J Harris at 919-560-4440 ext. 29120 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
