HOUSTON, TX. (CAROLINA SPORTS LIVE) — The Carolina Panthers are in Houston, taking on the Texans Saturday afternoon at NRG Stadium.
It didn’t take long for Coach Dave Canales to go back on his word on Bryce Young and the starters playing more than the drives they played in Week 1 against the Browns.
Once again, they played only two drives against the Texans. The offense did not look good as they failed to get a first down and combined for three yards on both drives. Young was 0/2, and Hubbard had only four yards on two carries.
Some of the receivers stayed in the game with Andy Dalton on the next drive, but that was his only time on the field. Dalton left the game with a right elbow injury with about 10 minutes left in the first half. He was replaced by Jack Plummer, who finished the half 7/8 for 56 yards.
Derrick Brown, on the other hand, was able to play a few defensive possessions for Carolina in the first half. During training camp, he was rehabbing a knee injury that he suffered in Week 1 last season.
Following the game, Coach Canales said Texas A&M rookie Nic Scourton suffered a collapsed lung during joint practice. The injury was originally thought to be heat exhaustion, but Scourton was taken to the hospital for treatment. He has since been released from the hospital.
Not much offense from either team in the first half. Rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald scored the only points for the Panthers on a 52-yard field goal, which trailed the Texans 10-3.
Coming back from the break, the Texans made another field goal in 11 plays. The ball was only back in the Panthers’ hands for a mere eight plays before Plummer’s pass to Renfrow was intercepted by the Texans’ Jaylin Smith.
The third quarter ends with the Texans up 10.
Shortly into the final quarter, the Panthers get intercepted once again, giving the Texans to opportunity to score another touchdown. The Texans score in just six yards, taking three plays.
Game ends 20-3. The Panthers made a total of 46 plays, 78 rushing yards, and 85 passing yards. Texans end with 64 plays, 110 rushing and 157 passing.
The Panthers will be home once again for their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Panthers are 0-2 so far in the preseason.
