One dead in fiery crash on US 64 East in North Carolina, troopers say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers are investigating what led to a vehicle crashing on the side of the highway and bursting into flames on a Wake County interstate early Sunday morning.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the crash around 4:10 a.m. on U.S. Highway 64/Interstate 87 at mile marker 432 near Lizard Lick Road just outside of Wendell.

Upon arrival, troopers told CBS 17 that the vehicle caught on fire. Our crew on scene saw the vehicle after the fire was extinguished in the woodline of the highway.

Troopers said that at least one person was killed and one person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Troopers are still on scene investigating the circumstances behind the crash and if there are others involved. So far, according to their preliminary notes, troopers said one vehicle was involved. It has yet to be determined if another vehicle was involved at this time.

According to the NC Department of Transportation at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, traffic is down to one lane, causing congestion in the area. The highway reopened later Sunday morning.
