CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WGHP) — Stephanie Marquez, of Cary, bought a $30 scratch-off and won a $1 million top prize, according to an NC Education Lottery news release.
“I was just kind of numb,” she said. “I kept thinking, ‘That can’t be real.’”
Marquez bought her winning ticket from Xpress Mart on North Sharon Amity Road in Charlotte.
When Marquez arrived at lottery headquarters on Friday, she had a decision to make.
She could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000.
She chose the lump sum of $600,000. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $430,508.
“This is a really good thing for us right now,” she said.
Marquez, a grandmother of two, plans to use some of her winnings to help pay for her grandchildren’s college education.
