New landfill fees in place

Area residents using the Surry County landfill and convenience centers will be paying more for some of these services.

Effective July 1, a new few structure went into effect for some of those services. According to the county, the new fees are:

• Residential and commercial brush, $35 per ton;

• Televisions, $5 each;

• All items taken to the landfill for disposal will be subject to the tipping fee of $47 per ton; this includes mattresses and box springs, furniture, and similar items;

• Landfill tipping fee, $47 per ton, which includes a $2 per ton state tax;

• Tires, accepted off the rim, $85 per ton;

• Fluorescent bulbs, $1 each;

• Electronics, commercial only, 35 cents per pound;

• Pallets, $45 per ton;

Additionally, the Surry County Public Works Department will not accept glass at convenience centers. “Unfortunately, glass does not have a stable market and is not cost-effective to recycle,” county officials said in a statement highlighting the new fees. Glass will only be accepted to recycle at the landfill location at 237 Landfill Road in Mount Airy.

Items accepted at all convenience centers at no charge includes household bagged garbage, aluminum, mixed paper, cardboard, and plastic.

Items accepted at the Mount Airy Landfill at no charge includes glass, white goods, scrap metal, tires off the rim with completed state form, and residential electronics (excluding televisions).
