Multiple counties assist in drug arrest

Six local law enforcement agencies coordinated their efforts in a recent multi-jurisdictional investigation resulting in the execution of a search warrant and arrest in Mount Airy on October 25 that led to a local man facing a number of charges.

Donald Lee Travis, 49, of 201 Eleanor Avenue, Mount Airy, was arrested and charged with four counts of trafficking methamphetamine, two counts of trafficking cocaine, one count of possession of a stolen firearm, and one count of maintaining a drug dwelling.

The search warrant was obtained by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division for the home on Eleanor Avenue and stemmed from an investigation for illegal distribution of controlled substances.

From the execution of the warrant and subsequent search of the property, detectives located more than 350 grams of methamphetamine, more than 47 grams of cocaine/crack cocaine, marijuana, and assorted firearms.

Detectives are continuing to investigate on issues related to the possession of a stolen firearm, with additional charges possible, according to Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt. Travis was placed under a $320,000 secured bond and received a court date of Nov. 15.

The residents of this neighborhood have been working with their own Neighborhood Watch efforts and coordination with the sheriff’s office over the past six years to reduce the impact of drugs in this area. The “see something, say something” approach has yielded results, according to residents on the ground.

Involved with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office was the Mount Airy Police Department, Stokes County Sheriff’s Office, Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.

Surry County Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt mentions that “this is excellent teamwork in combating the illegal distribution of controlled substances.”
