Mountain Park among first to use online platform

In March schools in Surry County School System began using a distance learning model to connect and communicate with students and parents across the county during the extended state wide school closure.

Digital Task Boards were created and sent out for students to use for review material and teachers began using Google Meet as a platform to hold staff meetings and office hours with other teachers, parents, and students.

Mountain Park Elementary was one of the first schools on board using this new platform. Teachers were eager to get their Google Meets set up and sent out to parents and students. They posted office hours on social media and school websites inviting students and parents to join the Google Meets during those office hours if they needed to communicate any questions or concerns they may have. Students were excited to get to see their teachers but the teachers were just as excited to get to see their students.

“It has been rewarding to get to have conversations with some of my students. I know I miss our daily interactions, and they seem to have enjoyed being able to touch base as well,” said fifth grade teacher Jamie Dowell-Young.

“The Google Meets began with a sole purpose of communication but will evolve if needed over the next few weeks as a teaching tool where teachers can introduce new material and give instruction virtually over the internet,” school officials said. “The county is currently working to ensure that all students have access to the internet and proper devices so that every student can benefit from these new tools.“
