Memorial award goes to Mount Airy High senior

Oshyn Bryant, a graduating senior at Mount Airy High School, was recently recognized with the Charlotte Weatherly Yokley Memorial Honors Award.

The daughter of Sheryl Angel, she was awarded the honor during a virtual honors program at Mount Airy High School.

The award is based upon academics, athletics, and community involvement. The 2020 winner, Catherine Sawyers, presented the trophy to Oshyn, who plans to attend Appalachian State University in the autumn.

The award is named in honor of Charlotte Weatherly Yokley, who was a member of the class of 1992. During her time in school, Charlotte was a member of the National Honor Society, a Junior Marshal, received the John Hamilton Award in 1990, and was a member of the varsity basketball, varsity track, and varsity tennis teams.

In the summer of 1991, just before the start of her senior year, Charlotte was traveling the British Virgin Islands on a sailing expedition with a group known as Actionquest. During the trip, she was struck by an intoxicated boat driver and lost her life.

Both the Charlotte Weatherly Yokley Memorial Honors Award and the Charlotte Weatherly Yokley Memorial Scholarship were established the following year to memorialize Charlotte.

The memorial award is chosen by the Mount Airy High School faculty from a ballot of seniors that are in the National Honor Society, have lettered in at least one sport, and are active in the community. The scholarship is chosen by the scholarship committee, and is based on attitude, character, and grades.
