(NEXSTAR) — This week, Warner Bros. Discovery announced its streaming service Max — previously HBO Max — would begin rolling out a new feature allowing subscribers to “add on” extra members to their accounts for an additional fee. Max is the latest streaming platform to implement a paid “extra member” approach, which Netflix also adopted years ago.
These types of features are widely viewed as an attempt to crack down on password sharing, though WBD has not directly indicated this was a factor.
Here’s how the Max Extra Member Add-On works:
- Per WBD, existing Max account holders can add additional non-household members to their accounts for $7.99 per member per month
- The cost to add members is $7.99 across the board, no matter which paid tier the primary account holder is subscribed to
- Extra members will be able create their own accounts under the same subscription and will have their own login credentials separate from the primary account holder
- Currently, Extra Member Add-On is limited to one add-on per account
In a statement, JB Perrette, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO/President of Global Streaming and Games, said the updates will give existing subscribers the ability to share with those outside their household “in an uninterrupted fashion.”
