Man hospitalized after crashing into creek near Bedford/Campbell County border

One man is in the hospital after crashing into a creek on Wednesday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened at 1:24 p.m. when police said a silver 2013 Dodge Charger going eastbound at about 60-70 mph crossed the median and westbound traffic lanes, ran off the side of the road, struck a ditch and an embankment and overturned in a nearby creek.

Police said the driver was taken to Lynchburg Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told authorities it was pouring rain at the time of the crash.

The driver was in the Charger for at least 10 minutes after it landed in the creek, according to police.

Three bystanders tried to help the man, as police said one performed CPR.

One lane of westbound traffic is now open while the road is expected to fully reopen at about 3:30 p.m.
