Man arrested in April 9 shooting

Nearly three weeks after a shooting which resulted in critical injuries to a Mount Airy man, another local man has been formally charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious bodily injury.

Brian Lee Thomas, 33, of 915 Oak Grove Church Road, Mount Airy, was charged with the crime Tuesday, when he was arrested at his home without incident. He was jailed under a $150,000 secured bond, according to Surry County Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt.

The charges stem from an April 9 incident at Thomas’ home, in which Burt Hampton Wallace, 37, of 907 Oak Grove Church Road, was shot while at Thomas’ home, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff said Wallace was treated and transported by Surry County Emergency Services to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center that night, and was still in critical condition for some time afterward. It wasn’t clear if Wallace is still hospitalized or has been released to return home, and no additional information regarding the nature of his gunshot wound was available Wednesday.

Another person was arrested at the time, though not charged in the shooting.

Danielle Moore Wallace, 37, who’s address is listed as the same as Burt Wallace — 907 Oak Grove Church Road — was arrested and charged with assault on a government official, resist, obstruct, and delay a law enforcement officer, and obstruction of justice. She was jailed, at the time, under a $25,000 secured bond on those charges.

The day after the shooting, the sheriff said that Thomas allegedly was the shooter, but no charges had been placed because the investigation was ongoing. “Mr. Thomas is currently cooperating with the investigation,” he said at the time.

“Deputies have responded to this address on many occasions in recent months concerning a property dispute,” the sheriff said in a written statement the day after the shooting.

His office released no additional information, although the sheriff did say that despite the arrest this week, the investigation is continuing.
