Look up, meteors will be flying overhead Tuesday morning

ALTOONA, PA. (WTAJ) — If skies cooperate, the opportunity to view the Perseids Meteor Shower will be present across Central Pennsylvania!

Although our skies will remain clear, we will have to deal with the brightness of the moon, which will impact the viewing ability.

According to the American Meteor Society, with the moonlight of the Waning Gibbous moon phase, the skies will be brighter. This will limit how often we are able to see the meteors passing overhead.

On average, during this moon phase, a viewer can see anywhere from 10-20 meteors per hour.

Peak activity is expected for pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday, Aug 13.

Locally, there are activities planned at Prince Gallitzin State Park.

If you are able to capture any of the meteors flying overhead, make sure you email WTAJWeather@nexstar.tv so we can share them on air and online.

How do you photograph a meteor shower?

Best practice is to choose a location that is higher up and away from any light pollution. A tripod and wide camera lens are also recommended.
