Local residents claim art show prizes

CRITZ, VA – Two local individuals were among those taking honors in the 45th annual JEB Stuart Art Show recently.

Julie Gammons, of Mount Airy, took second place in the acrylic panting category with her work, “Isolation; Debbie Culler of Ararat, Virginia, took first place in the same category with her work “Morning Sunrise.” In addition, Mount Airy’s Brianna Speight won the Purchase Award with her work, “Waiting by the Barn.”

The show opened with a Virtual Awards Ceremony on Sept. 10. Artists and community members were able to view the show virtually and then see the award winners. In addition, a video message to the artists from judges P. Buckley Moss and her daughter Becky Ghezzi was an encouragement to continue creating, especially during a challenging time such as this.

Artists from Surry and Stokes counties in North Carolina and from Patrick, Henry, Carroll and Franklin counties in Virginia were eligible to enter, with 36 participating and 70 pieces on exhibition. The show is available for viewing in person by making an appointment online or by e-mailing Lisa Martin at martinlm@vt.edu.

The gallery is open on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only, and appointments should be made no later than the Thursday before the weekend. Appointments can be made by visiting the website at www.reynoldshomestead.vt.edu. Attendees will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award when they visit the exhibition.
