A Mount Airy man was shot Thursday night, and remained in critical condition Friday morning. A local man has been identified as the shooter and has not been charged in the incident, but a local woman is in jail, charged with two crimes in the aftermath of the shooting, though she has not been charged with anything directly related to the shooting.
Meanwhile, investigators were still on the scene this morning, trying to piece together what happened.
According to Surry County Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt, his deputies arrived on the scene, at 915 Oak Grove Church Road, Mount Airy, around 8 p.m. Thursday to find Burt Hampton Wallace, 37, of 907 Oak Grove Church Road, suffering from an “apparent gunshot wound.”
The sheriff said Wallace was treated and transported by Surry County Emergency Services to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was still listed in critical condition Friday morning.
Brian Lee Thomas, 32, of 915 Oak Grove Church Road, allegedly was the shooter, according to the sheriff. “Mr. Thomas is currently cooperating with the investigation,” he said.
During the subsequent investigation of the shooting, Danielle Moore Wallace, 37, who’s address is listed as the same as Burt Wallace — 907 Oak Grove Church Road — was arrested and charged with assault on a government official, resist, obstruct, and delay a law enforcement officer, and obstruction of justice. She was being held Friday morning in the Surry County Detention Center under a $25,000.00 secured bond.
“Deputies have responded to this address on many occasions in recent months concerning a property dispute,” the sheriff said in a written statement released Friday morning. It was not immediately clear what relationship Burt Wallace and Danielle Wallace have to one another.
His office released no additional information, other than to say “this is an on-going and active investigation,” and that officials from his office had remained on the scene collecting evidence and following up throughout the night.
