Lightning strikes North Carolina group home, displacing 10 people: Officials

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — As central NC prepares for stormy weather this weekend, one Durham home has already felt a tragic impact.

According to the Durham Fire Department, around 10:45 p.m. Friday night, lightning struck a home in a cul-de-sac on Gardenview Place.

The fire chief said the first crew of firefighters saw the blaze coming from the third floor of the house, prompting a larger response. In total, according to the chief, 40 firefighters rushed to the scene.

The fire was under control in 15 minutes, according to the news release. No injuries were reported.

Ten people were displaced as a result of this fire, and the fire chief said the Red Cross is assisting them with lodging.

CBS 17 was at the scene as the residents of the group home were gathering their things. The home is part of a 14-house independent recovery community. The top of the house was completely destroyed by the lightning strike and fire.

More behind the cause is under investigation, but the fire chief said it appears the fire started because of the lightning strike.
