The Salem Fair is making some big changes after Wednesday night’s shooting.
The fair’s overall hours will remain unchanged, but here’s a look at the four changes announced on Thursday:
- Those younger than 18 years old must now be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian with a valid I.D. while on the fairgrounds
- While the fair will still be open until 11 p.m. each night, gates will now close at 10 p.m. and the fairgrounds and rides will close at 11 p.m.
- Everyone will now be subject to bag checks and electronic wanding at gate entry
- Police will have increased staff throughout the fairgrounds
For those who were at the fair on Wednesday night, fair officials did address questions of those who may have bought wristbands.
- If you bought a wristband or redeemed your Megapass on opening night, you can redeem your wristband for a new one for Wednesday, July 7.

- To redeem that offer, you must have your June 30 wristband, even if it’s been cut
- If you purchased a Megapass in advance and are looking for a refund, fair officials said they are evaluating the options and plan to have a definitive answer after the July 4th holiday.
“Our hearts go out to those who were affected by last night’s unfortunate incident at the Salem Fair,” said Salem’s Director of Civic Facilities Wendy Delano. “In the 33 years this event has been held, we have never had to deal with an event like this. We have worked diligently with our city management, public safety officials and Deggeller Attractions since last night to enhance safety for all of our guests.”
The fair will open at 4 p.m. Thursday after closing early on Wednesday night.
