Kernersville child care center ordered to make changes after toddler’s leg broken

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A two-year-old left a Kernersville day care with a broken leg, and, on Monday, a former employee went before a judge on a charge of abuse.

On Monday, Nadia Norwood was in Forsyth County court for allegations dating back to last summer. Norwood, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious physical injury after a 2-year-old’s leg was fractured in her care in June 2024 at First Baptist Church Child Development Center in Kernersville.

Norwood is no longer employed at the center, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services took action to prevent her from ever working, applying or being inside a child care facility in the state again.

The facility received strict instructions from the NCDHHS to rewrite procedures and train staff on the rules to make sure something like this never happens again.

Documents from the state say Norwood lied on the incident report at the day care, and she did not follow procedure to get emergency medical care after the injury.

The two unannounced visits from the state right before the incident found 12 violations, seven of which were related to staff not being properly trained.

In December, the state issued a written warning and sent a corrective action plan that First Baptist Church Child Development Center needs to follow to keep its license. The daycare must update its discipline policies and develop a written plan for emergency medical care. The director must also go over all of these documents with the staff members.

The emergency medical care plan was approved on March 10. The state conducted its last visit that same day and found no violations.

The discipline policies were submitted to the state but they need revisions. FOX8 reached out to see if the March 14 deadline was met, but we have not heard back.

The judge did not allow our camera inside. FOX8 found Norwood afterward and she did not want to answer any questions. She did, however, have several supporters in court with her.

FOX8 called First Baptist Church Child Development Center, and they hung up the phone. When we stopped by, they said they would not answer our questions.

Nadia Norwood is expected back in court in June.
