House Bill filed could change graduation requirements in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA (WNCT) — A house bill filed by Representative Keith Kidwell would change graduation requirements for students in North Carolina.

The “Reach Act” would require students to take at least three credit hours of instruction in either American history or historical documents. Kidwell says it’s important for every American to know and understand the principles on which this country was built.

“You know, you take certain required courses, this would be one of the required curriculum in order to get your diploma, be it an associate’s degree all the way up to a doctorate. So you’ve got quite some period of time to take those, and to me, it’s more important than probably any other course you could take,” said Kidwell.

If passed, this bill would take effect in the 2026-27 school year in both community colleges and universities. He also says there is a possibility that every student, regardless of what year they’re in, would have to add this class to their coursework.
